Following Sunkoshi

From a tour of the villages in Kabhre, Sindhuli and Ramechhap following Sunkoshi-river, we landed at Siddhartha Art Gallery in Kathmandu to participate in a photo exhibition titled ‘Beautiful Unan’. We were amazed to see the pictures of the civilization of China’s Unan province as they exactly resemble to the places of Nepal. Visitors were expressing their sentiments saying ‘These roofs look like roofs from my own Jufal (Dolpa).” “I have reached my village’s houses with hanging corns and chilly.” “This suspension bridge resembles one over Sunkoshi connecting Sindhuli and Ramechhap.”

A suspension bridge, over Sunkoshi river, that connects Ratamate of Sindhuli and Bhirpani of Ramechhap district.

Many scenes of Unan are like alleyways of our Patan. A picture resembles Chinkamugal of Kathmandu crowded by people. An elderly woman baking bread looks like Subbeni aunty of my village. Half naked girls enjoying bathing in a hot spring gave me an image of our Tatopani. Crumbling wooden, bamboo bridges recalled a sad time and lifestyle. Some look like Fewa Taal and OlangchungGola of Taplejung.

50 Chinese historians, who came to Nepal carrying ‘Pu-war’ tea of Unan, had captured these images of Unan and Nepal for a ‘Comparative Present’. “We have come here to recreate the romantic history and also to excavate our old route” said Ma Da, a member of the Unani team, “You may understand it as rewriting of cultural history.”

These pictures have portrayed existing realities of the rural parts of China. I forgot modern Chinese Shanghai, Hong-Kong, Bejing etc. during entire exhibition. I felt like I have just returned from the ‘Chhoti’ shops of the outskirts of Ramechhap.

A scene of Unan, China.

Unan too has many pitiful faces like we have our indigenous Rautes in Nepal. The ‘Beautiful Unan’ also contains a message that ‘inner reality can not be judged from outside’. I consoled myself- Why should we grieve of our situation while a developed country is bearing a pitiful lifestyle! And I reiterated a Mao’s quotation prominently displayed in Ramechhap- “We are proficient not only in destroying the old world, but also in building a new world.”

Wonderful work. But I suggest to give some guide line for travelling/treking from headquartes providing distance in KM, tentaive time in hour for treking / bus/car ( e.g. say from Ktm/ Bhaktapur/ Banepa/) to the place whose details/photos have been given in order to capitalize the inforamtion and to plan visit of such places completely on the basis of your inforamtion.

    Thanks, we expect more
