The life of the Nepalese in Qatar

Posted in Travel & Places, विदेश (Foreign) at 8:51 am by www.PHALANO.com

By Tristan Bruslé

With 266,000 people, and 100,000 more to come in 2008, the Nepalese in Qatar are about to become the first foreign community in this tiny Gulf country. They are also the first concentration of Nepalese outside Nepal and India. As soon as one steps off the plane from Kathmandu at Doha airport, one is struck by a certain kind of familiarity with the airport staff. The visitor to Qatar wonders at the number of young men speaking khas kura or wearing “Nepal” branded caps. In the streets of Doha, in shops, in shopping malls, in offices, in restaurants, on building sites, the Nepalese toil to earn their living and help their family at home.

Workers arrive in Doha wearing manpower agency caps.

Thanks to it boasting the second gas reserve in the world, Qatar is a fast growing economy which needs low skilled workers. All unqualified jobs are done by foreigners, and especially by the Nepalese, who, nowadays, are the most sought after compared to Indians or other nationalities. The Nepalese’s reputation is excellent: they are said to be hardworking, honest, cheap and not prone to complaining. Unfortunately, this means that the Nepalese are an easy target for con men, be the Dalals from Nepal or employers in Qatar.

After breaking both legs at work this young boy has been staying in his room for two months, living thanks to the help of his friends.

It is non uncommon to meet desperate workers who have not been paid for months or who have been abandoned by their company after being injured at work. It also means that their basic salary is lower than that of other nationalities. However, the more educated Nepalese complain that the Nepalese image is too much associated with that of an unskilled worker. Nonetheless, the number of qualified Nepalese rises every year: there are about 100 executives from Nepal in Qatar.

Unskilled workers are usually put up in labour camps that is buildings rented by their company. The biggest concentration of labour camps is the Industrial Area, near Doha. Hundreds of thousands of men live there in camps where living conditions largely depend on the care the company takes of its workers. Some camps are well maintained, and even provide table tennis and snooker facilities. But the majority of them are overcrowded (up to 16 men to a room with three tiered bunk-beds), sometimes dirty and not suitable for men spending years abroad.

Cleaners in the up-market Al Khor Community.

Life in a camp is monotonous. Everyday except for Fridays, workers are taken to their work site by company buses. For lunch, tiffin boxes filled with Dal Bhat are provided. At the end of the afternoon, when the workers come back to their camp, some of them begin their second job, called part time, which consists in being a servant in private houses. At night, after another plate of Dal Bhat, it is time to play cards or watch the latest Nepalese movie. These days Muglan is the favourite one. Friday is the only day when workers have time off. Some wash their clothes and rest all day. Others go to Doha. The favourite destination is Nepali Chowk, a temporary place created by the Nepalese in the centre of Doha. Here, thousands of men gather, meet their relatives or villagers, have tea and buy the latest Nepalese movie or songs. Homesick men can also buy Nepalese Paan, Khukhuri cigarettes and “Top of the world” T-shirts. The atmosphere is like that of Ason Tole during the rush hour, be it for the total lack of women and temples… From the Nepali Chowk, many workers head for one of the six Nepalese restaurants where Momo, Dal Bhat and Sukuti are to be found. A sense of familiarity and of being together is important for those who struggle in a foreign land, away from home and family.

More often than not, photographers don’t see great photo opps. instead they shoot lots of frames of interesting moments and great pictures emerge. that’s been my personal experience and my observation. Always keep in mind that it`s not about places you`ve missed, it`s about thoughts you`ve walked by, ideas and good photo. Thank you.

It is sad to see the construction laborers working without the minimum safetyness.I get surprised to see the responsible authorities’ negligences to ensure the basic rights being assured.Arabian countries are rich enough to respect it.The basic conditions of nepalese are more than inhumane. It really makes me upset,i wonder the nepali government too.

I have traveled several occasions via Doha and it is very much true that it is not uncommon to find familiar faces and hear people speaking our own language. Even there are many Nepali staffs in Qatar Air desk with whom I prefer to speak in Nepali!!! It is good that we developed brand of industrious, reliable, honest, cheap and non complaining workers. It is high time that Nepal government should come up with training programs in package that are suitable for the employers in countries like Qatar, Malaysia, South Korea etc. If not skilled category, at least we could send Nepali brothers and sisters in semi skilled category and help them to improve their earning capacity and living facilities.

Whilst Nepalese are known for diligent, honest and dependable workers, I heard that Nepalese people in Gulf countries are getting lesser salary than their counterpart from India and other countries. This is very unfortunate situation. Labor ministry from Nepal seems to be more interested in paper works rather than interested in substance. For example, there are agents who get medical report required by ministry without having to go through medical check up! While policy in relation to exporting labor needs to be refined back in Nepal, most important part is the relation and negotiation at the state level.

It also unknowingly radiates an emergence of a new Nepali needed for a new Nepal.

The work presented is highly appreciable. This collection is depicting real life out there. We Nepalese should be proud that we are able to achieve a bit in every corner of the world. Nepalese have been proved very reliable to the works allotted.

Some handful of people here at Nepal should learn a lesson from this and lead the country towards peace and prosperity. Otherwise, no Nepalese, residing either at Nepal or abroad will stand in support of their pranks.

I would personally like to thank everyone who are showing great courage abroad.

Thank you Tristan Bruslé and phalano.com for photo diary of Nepalese living in Quatar. I compared the bachelor life of these young men to those Chinese immigrants who came to United States in 18th and 19th century and worked hard under low wage. These pictures reflect how the safety standard has not maintained by the government/companies to their workers. Also, I don’t think it’s legal to allow up to sixteen people sleeping in a single room in Quatar.

It’s been known that the innocent, poor and peasant Nepalese have been brainwashed and manipulated by handful of individuals on their advantage in our country. With ten years of bloody civil war and now power struggle among rightists, leftists and the royalists, nobody knows where we are heading into. Until we, the Nepalese as a whole, acknowledge that we the people have power to create the government on our will and it’s solely created to serve us on our need, make government employees to work on their aaaassssssss off for the salary they they’ve been paid to, stop giving bribe in any form to government and private sector employees, obey rules and regulations and stop supporting our “notoriously liar” politicians blindly, I think we can build new Nepal. It is our choice not to see the light at the end of the tunnel. If the countries that are geographically the same or smaller in size than us like: Singapore, People’s Republic of China (Taiwan), South Korea etc. are five to ten times densely populated than us have stood themselves as developed nations in the world and are constantly demanding more and more labor inflow and Nepal with only appx. twenty nine million people, on the other hand, overwhelmed with unemployment and deteriorating security condition, forcing hundreds of thousands of young men and women overseas to work in those humiliating working environment struggling to make ends meet, these pictures worth thousands of words themselves.

And after all, carrying all these pains and broken dreams, we the Nepalese wherever we go, always smile. Simply priceless!

Let’s show “Universal Love to humankind and the rest”
    Peace

I wish our government could impose some rules on the government of Quatar and or any other Arab nations to create a safe work environment for our Nepali brothers but I don;t know if it will ever happen. I guess it is ironic. we Nepalese are third world citizens so our government cannot have an upperhand towards making a safer working environment for our brothers in the Arab nations. Poor guys of a rich nation, Nepal, condemned to leave their loved ones behind for years in pursuit of a source for just “daal bhat” in a scorching sun of a foreigh land. Shame to those so-called leaders who are proud of proposing to send thousands of Nepali sons and daughters in the Middle Eastern countries, instead of working for devising a better socio-political, and economic framework that would create the situation for every citizen to survive and share happiness and tears with the tiny kids, wives. The brothers whom I see in these pictures, miss all that.
Honestly speaking, they are married bachelors, condemed to live in a foreign land for earning every possible penny, at the cost of everything–how would they imagine getting the loving hand of a wife, listening the babbling tongue of a tiny daughter, and the complaints of a sick father or mother. They spend their youths in these lands, and get back when they get old. When will the day come when these brothers will come back to the country that has been incessantly raped by the Ranas followed by Panchayet, and Bahudal badi wolves. Shame on these corrupt leaders who create the situation to leave everything–from home to the loving hand of a wife and the smile of the children.

Fantastic presentation. Have lived and worked in Qatar for abt 3-1/2 years myself and the pics were like a flashback. Thanks

It proves again the three Qualities of the Nepalis working abroad(DDD, dirty daring and dangerous) which we are always forced to do and thats for the price of peanuts.

Before we start blaming others for the exploitation, we have to look back home to the Manpower agencies, the contracts they make with minimum salary, maximum fee and maximum work. I should say lets start the correction from the beginning. We have always proved that we can always do the job so why for peanuts and why for Qatar?? Lets take the example of the Philippines, the way their government support in each and every case of their citizens working aboad.
I have started thinking +ve, surely we’ll reach there one day.

There are numerous things behind such fate of our yuung energetic age .For example, I think we nepali should have better education to inspire us not to hesitate to work hard in our own village/town. These boys, I think, couldn’t get good incentive to study hard in their school/college life.
We need to be able to fight against government staffs (civil or armed) who is corrupt. We need sacrifice for the nation by not giving any bribes. We need to learn to speak with respect to all neighbours and community whatever be their ethnicity. We need to make our own effective laws and everyone should obey it for the peaceful society.Nepal needs a lot of skilled and honest manpower and sincere investment to creat jobs and develope the country.

It quite sad to see these young men working so hard for so little. They are here for their family whom they love dearly. They work hard and spend very little on themselves to save and send home.

Family back home should never forget that, family should member it before they spend every PAISA they receive. We should all pray for these hard working, loving and caring individuals.

as i am in qatar itself, i know the real life here.. more than 90% of nepalese are labour here.. they came from different manpowers with no any traning and skill.. so they are forced to do labour job mostly at construction.. and most of them are uneducated also… this is the main problem of nepalese.. illiterate and unskilled are the biggest cause for the nepalese to struggle here like hell.. i have seen the life of other 10% also who is literate and skilled who are working inside the offices like accountant, document controller, time keeper, material keeper, store keeper, safety instructor etc etc.. they earn a lot more also.. on an everage most of nepalese who comes on 90% earns 400-1500 QR that is 7000 – 28000 NRS… per month and out of 10%, 9% earns 40000 – 100000 NRS and i have seen nepalese who earns 2-6 Lakhs per month who comes under 1%.. this is the real life here.. so i suggest all the manpowers to send peoples here with some skill and some education,…. they can give them a 4-6months traning which can help them a lottttttttt….. thanks….

    Merci Tristan Bruslé!
The series of photos reveal a fact, if Nepalese youth get a chance in Nepal they can surpass all the obstacles no matter how demanding they are. Right now the politicians in Nepal are misusing them to create vandalism and destruction to serve their selfish purpose.
Nice set of pictures! So nice to see them smiling even in such a demanding situation. They get tossed around not only in foreign land; the indifference towards them starts from the manpower office, in the line of KTM Airport and that is just a start. Time for Nepal government to realize their importance and promise them basic support and security which they deserve as a human being; after all, in addition to being true Nepali they are asset of Nepal.
All the best to all Nepalese all around the world.

Human life is really so important and nver buy and sell in money. The situation of nepal creates the this sort of condition for all nepali. We must think about it once again. Why we are all leaving the country when you needed by your country. I really alway ask myself as well. Anyway, wherever you are do your best. God bless all neplese. Whatever is the condition of Nepali living in Qatar I read and see in the pictures, the most important and touching is the feelings of Neapal on them one can see in all pictures. I could not stop my eyes tearing.

Dear Nepali brothers and sisters, wherever you are take care of yourself, we read many are dying while they are sleeping. Consult your health workers in the company if you have any health problems. Don’t forget to drink water regularly. And remember always your home/ family and motherr Nepal. Don’t fight each other. It’s really sad to see all the picture posted coz whatever expectation we nepalese had whilst going to qatar it happens to be just opposite. Many of them return to their home being handicapped or with bare hand.I specially wants to blame to government of Nepal for being careless in such serious matter and so called political leader as well. The higher post leader and the parties always used the young generation for their selfishness ,foresay fighting against each other and adverise for the election. But they never tried to give concrete solution for good jobo pportunity for the nepalese guys. They simply used them and threw it.this is the reason why optimum nepalese youngsters forced to be in so miserable condition in arabian country despite their capability.

Its definately a huge pity , a big manpower from our country has been working for the foreign countries. I dont know whom to balme for this scenario. Though the people residing and working outside Nepal has sustained the declining economy within the country , Nepal is still way lagging way behind. What about the same amount of be labour used in Nepal to build our economy, our industries and our roads? What about the work of about 300000 Nepalese workers working for their own country. It would certainly bring change. Doesnt it??
But we all know our country has been going through this chaotic phase. No other options than to flee away. The biggest thing is Survival. So i want to pledge the political parties and those who are manhandling the power to stop running for their own sake and think for the welfare of Citizens in nepal. If all those who work outside could work in nepal Our country will be Not the same. and that would be the NAYA NEPAL (new nepal) everybody talks about now…

I m so happy to see the clear view of what’s going on in Qatar..
Everyone actually every nepali knows about this situatuion and the hard work they have to do in foreign land….but do they have the option..

We r staying somewhere else from Nepal and and trying to convience that we exactly know how they(Nepalis in Qatar) feel in the froreign land and and the homesickness and the food made by the loved ones..but actually we dont know any of those things at all…speak with the one who stays there..and u will know.. U may not cry but ur heart certainly will….

They r brave much braver than the ones appointed as British army…
They go to war and sometimes they may die…but the workers at Qatar dies every single day…
My question is…who is responsible….mother Nepal or the system of our country…which cannot perfom or take any steps to for the Brothers and sisters of Nepal…
I really am ashamed of our leaders…….
!!!!!!!! Please somebody do something !!!!!!!!!!!!

This is the legacy of 18 years of democratic rule and 10 years of Maoist inflicted violence……..we are forced to leave our homes and families and toil in the hot foreign sun so that our children back home can have two square meals.
Is this what we bargained for when we moved in thousands in front of the Narayanhiti Palace asking for democracy….is this what we dreamt for when when we voted the Nepali congress to power…..is this what we are entitled to….
There will never be a new Nepal unless our problems in a foreign land are addressed to…there will never be a new Nepal unless you and I have the option to go back home and sleep under the cool mountains and sky…there will never be a new Nepal unless you and me and our children are guranteed a ajob and two square meals in our own homeland.

Phalano always showing very nice pictures and not only that, also remembering everybody the real situation of our world, I was in Nepal in the spring of 2004 when many days the people of Kathmandu were protesting against the king and saw the pictures of the police brutality reflexed in the faces and bodies of innocent people.
Hopefully the new elected government will care for this big number of nepalese working in teerrible conditions overseas and especially in the gulf ountries where conditions are below human rights, so sad!

I think Nepali goverment is responsible for this problem. There are so many workers coming from other countries too, and their goverment has salary cap which means employers have to pay fixed salary to hire workers. Nepali goverment should try to negotiate with Qatar goverment for these issues.Besides that, I don’t think its that bad in Doha. Atleast you have a job which pays your bills. Let’s face the reality,If our own country cannot produce enough jobs than its our fault not others. The worst part is people losing life and getting injured in Doha.Again Nepali embassy in Qatar is useless and they have no ability represent Nepali people.

Nicely written and good pics. Thanks everyone for showing us the
life of the hard working Nepali people abroad. They were the same people who worked so hard in Nepal for living and did not complain for what they receive as small earnings. Being innocent and ignorant, they faced similar situation outside. Yet they are delighted to send their tiny earnings to their family back home. There must be some place in the Nepal’s government to secure their job and their rights to offer them what they really deserve. May god help them in every step of their work.

It may be very easy for me to say such things because I live in London but I must say this: If anyone working in Qatar as hard as this only earns around 10-20 thousand rupees a month, they can do so in VILLAGES which are up to half days walk from a road. Let me tell you how. Buy 4 buffaloes or 6 cows or 15 goats or 10 pigs to start with from the money you paid DALAL to go to Qatar and rent a neighours land if you do not have your own. Or rent your neighbours land (if you do not have your own) and plant DHANIYA in 1 ropani every month. If you live in the hills then better, plant oranges or grapes – you simply have to work as much as you work in Qatar or abroad (i.e. 6 or 5 days a week rain or shine). Nepal now imports fruits and rice from India this is because Nepalese do not like to work in their own fields, they only want a JOB under someone else’s command.

I know you do not like this comment but if you work 6 days a week in Nepal as hard as this even as a KAPADI, BOTTLE COLLECTOR, BARBER etc you can make the same amount of money and live with your family all the time. Nepal will never change no matter what kind of government it may come unless Nepalese work as hard as they do ABROAD.

I know many people will not like my comment but the reality is that Nepalese are LAZY in Nepal and HARD-WORKING elsewhere!

Good luck to you all who pay DALAL 70 thousand or more to work as a labour without realising what you could do in your own village with 70 thousand rupees investment!

When I looked above pictures, I felt so sad. See, how Nepalese people are living and spending their life. “LIFE” what the life there, actually there is no any life. You can see the picture where Nepalese people are working in the construction of a building without any safty belt and without using any sefty, they can be meet with accident in any time. What is government doing, they are not sencier about the workers there, however they used to collect thousands of money by their tax……………… we should have to start revolution about that.

As i m also the student in singapore and i also think like da same wat they did. But all gonna be like a dream. Wat can we do? Revolution, protest, bla bla….? All bull shit. Even there is no respect, no peace, no security, always protest, shortage of petrolium, increase of gas, strike in our own country….then how we expect in overseas>>>??? Belated Happy New Years 2065 to Qutar bashi and all Nepalese

Thanks T. Brusle for Introducing Nepalese communities at Doha’s throughout the Globe.

I would like thanks to Qatar govt. providing work permits to Nepalese communities and all the friends those have this abroad job experiences. At least we are getting some of the opportunities abroad. Respecting works definitely brings a new light in future.

I understand some of our Nepalese friends are lending high interest rate or sold their properties just to aboard in Qatar. Unfortunately, some of them are looted by some culprit dalal and manpower in our home country as well as Qatar. I as a government official have had a bitter experience with one or many man powers misbehavior. They cheated to my relatives not offering the pre condition job and salary and also lingered long time to send them after depositing their offered money however I was in contact with that brutal behaved man power. I think many of the Qatar friends might have such experiences and absorbing it sensitively and helplessly.
I had been in Doha for a short time and have a bitter experiences learning from some workers at the city center how the Nepalese are cheating by Nepalese more significant is the inhuman behave of some companies or work providers. On the other hand only some of them have better offered job, benefits and god business.
It is true and we most be realize human resources is crucial in the world and each of dalal, company and country most recognized the important of this fact and should behave and honor the honest Nepalese as their home country’s labor act providing similar facilities as their citizen are bagging. I am optimistic these days are not far. I hope you all are doing best and we Nepales by birth are honest and familiar to respects other cultures , works and well behave to each other, this is our weapon to be proud and that is our hope to explore more opportunity in future.
Good luck and may this new year bring you and your families healthy, happy, peace and prosperities.

Thanks alot to the FALANO.COM Team for this wonderful efforts for bringing this live like day to day life of Neplease brothers/sisters in Qatar.

Although I stay in Bahrain but the lifestyle as described above is similar here also.Bahrain is of half of size of Qatar and Neplease community here is lesser in number in comparison to Qatar.

The reasons of hiring people in entire Gulf region from the foreign countries can be divided into two categories.

1)Not having highly qualified manpower in local job market.
2)Foreign labours (unskilled obviously) becoming cheaper in comparison to local manpower/Non availability of local people to do low profile jobs.

The workforce to be recruited from Nepal falls under second category, for this we should not blame any one, its just due to our overall education system as well as Attidue related issues.

Even from Nepal people are doing jobs under skilled manpower category but the number of such people is very less and countable.

Hope this site will work in future to bring Neplease life style related news from other countries in the Gulf as well as other countries wherever Neplease people around the globe.

If some sort of help/information can be ustilised I will be very glad to provide such contribution.

    Thanks alot again.

    God Blace you!!
Thank you to Falano publisher to published the photos that will be helpfull who don’t know about life of workers in gulf countries. I hope you will publish again more again.

Here is more critical condition of the most construction worker because lots of nepali workers are working outside temp. will be 50-55cls + 99% hummidity 24 hour in the summer time, thery paid only for food that QR.500/month. Some company, they have to work 10-12hr work as normal pay, didn’t pay on time, didn’t pay or get as of the contract, living in many people in the small room without A/C in the some company . Mostly who working on helper they can’t eat evan warm nepali dal bhat because now a days, all commodities prices is going hike 50 to 100% so if they eat notmal food the balance will be ZERO in the month. So suggest to the all nepali brothers if you coming to work in the overseas ( gulf), Never come in labour or helper work baecause you never save money, only you will clear you loan which you paid to manpower agent, within 2 years in your contract that without dal bhat.
So, dear nepali brothers , be carefull with others, Don’t belive to third person and lern about the detail fefore deccide to go overseas work. Take care your self.

Once again thank to the phalano to publish more and more pictures of other gulf contries also.

I would like to express my sincere thanks to the authors who have shared this picture story with us about our brother in Doha.
No matter where you are, away from home is always difficult and is full of misery. But the smile on the faces of my brothers tell me that they are happy to have a plate of rice and dhal for them and their family at home. They are making a significant contribution not only to sustain their family but also the country’s poor economy.
I hope with the new government in nepal and now as it declared a republic we will not have to see our brothers and sister apart from the country. Even if they have to, I hope the new government takes stringent measures against those unreliable manpower that send our father, son, brothers to such a misery without prior notice of the situation there. Those who are there have borrowed money, sold their properties to make it there, but frequently cheated and tricked by the evil manpowers. Hope the government of qatar recognizes the honesty, and hard working spirit of the nepalese people and make some changes towards it too and non the less both the governments have to reach a bilateral commitment towards improving it.

I wish them all the best

Only that upset me. Yes work is always hard anywhere. Probably they can’t get a good salary like people who work in Britain, japan, Europe or America so what they have an enough income to look after their family and pay the debt and lift a burden in the country. They don’t have to borrow hefty money to put the bond on like going to other countries. It would be good if the jobs organisations can provide some information about tools and job saftey intructions in a video or DVD to give a rough idea about what type of job these people are going for.

Thank you for the posting photos of overseas( gulf) worker’s daily life. Most of nepali people could not eat Daal bhat twice a day because of to save money. In the Qatar, bood is very very expensive within year but salary is same as 10 years ago. In the gulf, nepali workers are getting lowest pay then other contries workers. But, our government didn’t care about it. May your phots are support to the public, how will be the gulf life who don’t know about the nepali workers in the gulf country. In the qatar, most of low scale salary workers are depend on KHABUS( sukhaa rotee) which is available in QR.1.00 for 7 pcs. Otherrwise they can’t save money.

THIS I S NOTICE FOR NEPALI UNSKILL WORKERS:
DO NOT COME TO GULF WITHOUT ANY SKILL THAT WILL BE LABOR/HELPER WHO WILL GET SALARY 450.00 to 600.00, working hour will be 8 hr to 10/12 hr its depanding on company. U WILL GET ‘OT’ IF COMPANY IS REPUTED OR ORGENIZED. THE ABOVE SALARY WILL NOT ENOUGH TO EAT DAAL BHAAT TWO TIME, KHAJA, SOME TIME SOFT DRINK, CONTACT TO HOME AND OTHER GENERAL ITEMS TO LIVE. THE CLIMATE IS VERY VERY TUFF DO NOT EMAGINE IN THE SUMMER 6 MONTH OF THE YEAR.
SO BE CARE FULL WITH BROKER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
U WILL BE DIE ALIVE IN THE GULF IF BELIVE TO THE WRONG PERSON AND COMPANY.
SO DO NOT HURRY TO DECIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i hope to see more tuff life real picture ( Photo)of nepali workers in the gulf reason to help from bad brokers.
