Legendary lyricist Ratna Shumsher Thapa in ‘Paleti’ (music audio)

By Rajesh KC
Ratna Shumsher Thapa, the legendary lyricist of Nepal, began writing as a poet in 1951. His creations such as Aankhako Bhaka Ankhaile, Swargaki Rani, Kunjama Gunjiyo, Bho Bho Nasodha, Madhumas Yo Dilko and Ye Kanchha Thattaima, Bichodko Pida, Sero Fero Mero have contributed making Narayan Gopal’s singing and music everlasting. Apart from these, his other lyrics such as Yo Kholako Sanglo Pani, Ankhaima Rata Gali, Jati Hansu Bhanchu, Goreto Yo Gaunko, Ghumtima Naau Hai, Fulai Fulko Mausam, and Malmali Ghumto have also contributed in building careers of various (now popular) musicians and singers across the nation.

Though, in the beginning, he had some inclination to playing Tabala and singing, he did not move ahead with these genres. Nevertheless, he remained attached to voice and rhythm via writing songs. Uniquely, Ratna Shumsher also has filled in words after listening to a tune which later became everlasting piece such as Goreto Tyo Gaun Ko and many more.

As the nepa~laya extends Paleti Srinkhala to reach out and present non-singing creators of Nepali Music, first time they came up with – Master Lyricist – Ratna Samsher Thapa describing and presenting his songs with Paleti Music Team’s backup. He was featured where his commemorative expressions as well as the popular songs that he once penned were presented.

In this ‘Paliti Srinkhala’, the 68-year-old lyricist Thapa shared his past creative days while presenting himself openly. His popular and quality old songs were voiced by the Paleti musician and nepathya’s back vocalist Suraj Thapa and Sheela Bista.

Let’s listen to Ratna Samsher’s legendary songs sang by these new talants Suraj and Sheela in Paleti.

Special thanks goes to Nepalya who have introdued new talent in Suraj and Sheela. This will help new talented artist of the country to come up and also entertain people with their woderful voice and music.
Providing opportunity to new generation-artists to sing old songs will also increase the interest of young Nepalese for music and lyrics that is nearly forgotten.
Bringing the old generation artists (musicians, singers, lyricists etc.) face to face with new is one way to respect our older generation who have given termendous wealth of songs and music to the country. We salute Nepaya team for their efforts.

Though I haven’t been to any of these (which I regret), its good to know that someone is doing it.
