Once upon a time in Chitwan

chitwan.gifIn 1846 The Rana Prime Minister Jung Bahadur protected the wildlife of Chitwan Valley by maintaining a hunting reserve in the area exclusively for the use of the ruling classes and their guests. Hunting was normally conducted during winter. Certain methods were used for hunting such as the ring method, in which a big circle of elephants would entrap the hunted animal. The number of elephants required for this process was quite large.

Stationary hunting from a perch of Machan, trapping in pits, Kheddah method, etc., were other methods of hunting.

The fall of the Rana dynasty opened up Chitwan’s forests for new settlers from the hills in 1951.

After declaration of the Terai as a malaria-free zone, people from the hills migrated to the Terai. In less than a decade, the population of the Chitwan increased from 36,000 in 1950 to 100,000 in 1960. This caused loss of habitat for wildlife species which ultimately became a threat to their survival.

In 1959 naturalist EP Gee recommended the establishment of a national park to the north of the Rapti river and proposed a rhinoceros sanctuary to the south of the river. HMG/Nepal set aside 800 sq. km for a rhinoceros sanctuary. In 1968 GJ Caughley and HR Mishra estimated 81 to 108 rhinos in the area.

King Mahendra approved the establishment of Royal Chitwan National Park as the first national park of Nepal in 1970.

Park was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1984.

446 to 466 rhinoceros were estimated in Chitwan National Park in 1994.

Nepal was home to over 544 rhinos in 2000, with Chitwan National Park having the second-largest population in the world.

The count named as “Rhino Count 2005″ found the rhino population had decreased by 160 in the last five years, 2000 to 2005. Of the total, 94 were killed for horns. 84 out of 87 rhinos translocated to Bardiya were killed by poachers.

Now the fauna of the world, one-horned rhino, has been struggling for its existence.

LET’S VISIT CHITWAN TO SAVE THIS INDANGERED SPECIES

Excellent pictures, and captions to raise the awareness about this species, Rajeshji. Thanks a lot for highlighting this.

If anybody is interested, we did a study on this species in 2003/2004 and predicted a decline in population before the 2005 count. Of course nobody from the wildlife department believed us then when we presented our findings, and didn\\\\\\\’t act on the recommendations! The details of the study we did, and all the working papers can be viewed here:  http://www.prem-online.org/index.php?p=projects&cid=6

Thank you very much for the beautiful pictures. It really projects the floras and faunas of Nepal.I fondly recall my first visit to the Tiget Top Camp alongwith my five students from Budhanilkantha School which was sponsored by the Tiger Tops management in March 1976.We met a number of visitors from New Zealand,America and other European nations. We saw everything except the tiger !We were proud to learn that our country was held in a very high esteem. Our beautiful country has much to offer in all areas of eco-tourism.Have stumbled onto people from America who simply loved Nepal. If only there were peace—!We enjoyed every minute of our three days stay in that area.

    Dear Rajesh,

Your photo session on Chitwan, specially on wildlifes are excellent. Once upon a time we used to have huge flocks of tiger, raino, elephant and other rare wild lifes in the area. But now they are alarmingly reduced in the LOW numbers.
If the Nepalese people and the government do not take needful measurement on time, the wildlife in Chitwan will be available in the wall paint ( as displayed in photo number 15 ) and mueseums ( as displayed in photo number 26 ).
All of us must learn these things now rather than it is too late.

    Jai Nepal !

Blend of natural surroundings and faunae is absolutely magnificient; photos are realistic. Heartful accolade for Mr. KC!!

As for endangered rhinos, no organisations seem to have any clear pathway for preserving this species. It’s a puzzling matter to think about. As aforementioned in this blog, the local people are preserving this area, in the same time there are also people who would kill this gentle creature for hides and horns. This is like a vicious circle, if I may reckon.

We should preserve the existence of every living being in the world. There should be strick rules and regulation to control the killing of any endangered species in Nepal. People around the world should discourage the use of commercial products made from these species. Otherwise One-horned Rhino will only be a myth for our future generations. Cheers to the photographer and the blog team!!!

    Thanks a lot, Rajesh Jee!
Your pictures reminded me of our great Chitwan once again. I had a chance to see a fierce battle of a couple of rhinos. I did have a very pleasant time sharing two weeks of my life going around the national park. I had seen plenty of elephants, rhinos, tigers, birds and other species of animals. Is our park still one of the rarest and richest parks in the world?

But recent news of poaching animals mainly rhinos is a heartbreaking tragedy. Besides anyhting else, animals should be an integral part of our ecology and national economy. We should not be cursed by our future generations. And so let’s not leave any stone unturned, as Rajesh jee has tried.

    Thanks once again!

    Hello rajesh ji,

it was really a good approach to hit the weak point of nepalese
forest departments by showing the true picture of our national parks.
When i had visited the national park this summer , i had seen quite a few rhinos, but the killings have not stopped. Specially our security at the indian side of the forest has to be tightened.

Hope the new developments/governments in Nepal, will make us feel proud about the national heritages being preserved.

The government are pretty busy seeing their own intrests that there’s no one to look after the poor animals and their extinct status!!! hope they’ll realise it someday and that better be early than late…
I also heard that since there are only few rhinos left in chitwan..the guides just show you few rhinos..and take you around and around..and show you the same rhinos again and again…but beware of being fooled around by the agents out there…and have a nice time in chitwan..i’ll go there someday…and it better not be as..(once upon a time..here were rhinos!!!!)

I am realy happy that you have been trying to save the Rhino, It is realy important for the Nepal, one of the income source for nepal, The national park helps country became a more papouler and it is help full to local besiness, When people would understand, when ever forest gurd cought the pocher, They should give the life time Jail then other people would not encourege to kill more rhino. If they stay in jail few year and pay money then they comeout from the jail again they will start to killed the animal. The rule has to be in strong and in reality too,not only on paper.

Furthermore, there is some thing fishy going on, we need to monitor the activities more since i came to know that the nepalese army are not doing a good job safeguarding them, instead some of the rotton ones among them killed them and smuggled their body parts.

It is a great pride for Nepal to save the wildlife heritage to learn about the animals and their natural habitat. Furthermore, the national parks and reserves of our country helps to generate employment to thousands of people through various tourism industries.

It is the moral responsibility of all Nepalese to help protect our endangered wildlife for the future generations to enjoy, but not to be killed for individual selfishness. Mother nature is no fool to create the wonderful creatures, and thus the wildlife also has equal rights to survive on this planet.

Those culprits involved in wildlife poaching must be severely punished, so they will never repeat their past mistakes. The photographer deserves our appreciation to increase awareness to save the rhinos and tigers of Chitwan National Park.

Many thanks for the interesting story which provides the history of Chitwan National Park and challenges for wildlife management especially rhinos. It is a big threat to Nepal’s icon wildlife and with effective people’s participation addressing livelihood needs of people around the park should be the strategy to save them not by guns alone. Political capital is a must to garner the support of influential people and politicians (see my article in the Kathmandu Post published on 17 January 07. we need strong, good and clean government, only then these things can truly be saved otherewise fund will come and fund will go but things will remain the same.

I THINK GOVERNMENT AND THE LOCAL AUTHORITY SHOULD TAKE SOME SERIOUSLY SOME ACTIONS AGAINST THESE PEOPLE AND NOT ONLY THAT BUT ALSO SHOULD COME WITH SOME ACTION PLANS TO MAKE RHINOS LIVELIHOOD BETTER.
AND FOR US WE SHOULD VISIT CHITWAN AND SHOULD HELP THIS AGENCIES OR LOCAL AUTHORITY THROUGH MONETARY OR BY VOLUNTEERING TO LOOK AFTER THIS ENDANGRED SPECIES.

Nepali 8 politicla parties and Government must setup border patrol camps inside Nepal and India borers.

Nepal must build barewire at Nepal border, so Nepali wild animal rahino, Musket beer and Tiger will not go to India. and also it helps to prevent illigeal indian hunters and control Indian criminals.

Corrupt and criminals are lavishly working and living in chitwan national park as a high ranking officers and forestry rangers. These criminal who are collaberating with hunters and Indian criminal to hunt and sale rahino horn and tiger skin to indian market.

Government must hunt, investigate and must give life-time or capital punishment to these government corrupted criminals. Criminals within chitwan national park management.

I am so sad that some of the rarest animals in this planet are being killed for selfish purposes. I work for Georgia Aquarium, the world’s largest aquarium and have learned how people in the developed countries love wild life and promote for their protection.

It is a great pride that Nepal has so much diverse wild life but sadly we are not able to keep them safe and manage their habitat. It should be an effort from every one of us to spread the message of love and compassion, the main mantra from Lord Buddha and stop killing these innocent animals for gainful purpose.

The government and the outside help can help to provide physical resources but it should be the people living around who should be vigilant and save these wonderful creatures.

So nice to see the great pictures of Rhino and the Chitwan National Park, great jobe on Khatam .com. We visited Sauraha last winter and enjoyed very much of the nature, and the work of the Buffer jones and the National Park. Please do save the Rhinos from the pochers, I think the local can protect it with the National Park staffs. We live in Sagarmatha National Park and we love here and we have learned lot from the National Park, to save the trees and the Nature, As we are Buddist we dont have problem of Pochers so the wild Animals have very safe in the National Park. Thank you very much to Khattam .com, that you have given me to write some comments.

    And all nepali,
Thank you verymuch for doing this hard work for the national park.
I am so thankfull to read news here about NEpal even I am living so for from my conuntry. Thank you for hard work.
