Rara Lake; Pearl of Nepal
Rara Lake lies in the remote Mugu district of Karnali region in the north-west of Nepal. Officially the Lake is centerpiece of Rara National Park. But I would also term it as a pearl of the country. Rara, covering 15 sq km area at the altitude of 2980m, is Nepal’s largest lake. It is a clear blue mountain lake with juniper, spruce and pine trees along its shores. About 3-4 hours hike from Gamgadhi (Mugu district headquarters) takes us through forests and over alpine meadows with herds of sheep and goats.
A few years back, I had an opportunity for two nights’ camping at the shore of the stunning Rara Lake with abundant wildlife and great views of the snowcapped mountain ranges across the deep blue water…

Unbelievable, Is it the real and natural picture of RARA without any special effect, if so, I think our country is the undoubtably most beautyful country in the world, I have seen lots of places in Europe from Eifel Tower (man made) to Rhyne river in Swiss but I have never found such natural beauties here, these picture are really awesome, I think we nepalese people have to travel all over Nepal first to know how precious our country is and tell to the rest of the world, so that our tourism as well as internal tourism will also flourish. Great job, Rajesh ji………….keep it up.

Amazing pictures but pictures donot do justice to beauty of RARA. I doubt if there is any lake in the world that comes par to RARA. I visited RARA in 1997 and spent two nights there. It was before maoist problem. It is one of the most cherished memory of my life. I can’t wait to go back again. I don’t know if that is possible with all the problem surrounding that area.

Rajesh ji,thank you for bringing out such nice pictures.well, i am also one of those lucky people who have experienced the beauty of rara and captured many snaps. Though i visited her 8 to 9 times, I never had chance to go up to the Murma Top and view the entire lake from above. The picture from the Murma is good but full view would have been much better.
Eash season has different picture. I specially liked the summer (srawan/bhadra) when you see colourful lake with many different flowers by the side of the lake.Winter in Rara is a complete different story with snow fall and chilling waves.Though it carries a great scope for tourism, due to difficult situations and difficult mode of travelling Rara hasnot exposed herself. You people are the one who can bring out her in exposure.I have got many snaps and if needed i can contribute . By the way I am a health personell working in Mugu since 20 months .thank you

i am not one to say that this is my land, so the prettier it is, the more importance i get, but in todays context, such pictures are a reminder of who we are. as a country and as a race of people. what we find in a poorer (for lack of a better word) country is the same grass and land in a richer country. it is afterall Earth that we inhabit. the difference lies in how we take care of it. It is very nice to see the beautiful pictures of Rara Lake. I visited Rara National Park twice during my government service as a conservation officer with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation. The tranquil beauty of the Rara lake combined with the surrounding natural scenes can be described as one of the most beautiful area in Nepal.
The local people surrounding the Rara lake will benefit from tourism industry provided that there is regular air services between Nepalgunj and Talcha airstrip. Let us hope that peace and security in the country will definitely attract both local and foreign tourists to visit these remote areas of Nepal.
I wish to thank the photographer for posting the beautiful pictures of Rara lake.

Few weeks back my boss showed me few snaps taken during his recent holiday in swiss and these very photos reminded of the same, execept there are no $350/night five star hotels overlooking the magnificient lake. All photos are georges, the second one in particular is a seren beauty, hoping there is no manipulation. This photo is reminder of the forgotten Nepal, karnali. Kudos to Rajesh dai for presenting us the with lovely photos.

Dear Admirers,
Rajeshji has done a great work – so you all with admiration of Rara and Rajeshji.
Today Rara is facing a tremendous threat. I was there just a month ago. A road – now a mule trail to be converted into motorable in the near future – is being constructed. Yes, people have their needs of priority. But they do take great pride in Rara. There is no group or instituion or individual to campaign for the restoration of Rara. You saw in one of the picture a herd of sheep. This is good as a rural scene but not something we should have in a park if we all want to continue enjoying. Park in the past has been administered with force. So, people today want to push a bit further with somewhat retaliatory mood in sublimation. Park has wrappers of packed food here and there. Park Warden Durga Paudel said there is no penny for them to organize any educational programs with people. On the western side of the park I saw prestine mixed mountain forest being chopped down or ring-barked to create a small piece of land. We cannot blame people – we have to remember its a food shortage area.
I keep on visiting Rara for my work. I was in a team to draw a management plan for Rara that I know will not be implemented. If you would like to do something to conserve Rara for its inhabitants and all of us. Lets do something. I am here to extend ‘free’ hand as long as I keep on going to Mugu that is at least for one year.
Looking forward to hearing from you one and all. For the purpose of contact I am putting my email address despite the notice: teekab-at-the-rate-info-dot-com-dot-np. I am sure, you tech savvys all know how to work it out.
Thanks.

The photos are awesome! Great Job and thanks for posting. A few suggestions:-
1. It would be nice to create a slide-show of the photos (instead of scrolling down the pages).
2. Increase the size of the pictures.

Lake Rara still looks the same 30 years later with serenity and melancholy. I did spend three years of my mid-twenties enjoying the beauty, which also turned me into a poet at times. It really is ‘Rara ko Apsara’. I wish I had digital camers then to document chages in a day from morning to evening; regular camera was too expensive to document all changes.
Thanks to Rajesh K.C. for bringing this to larger viewer/audience.
